Heidi Montag

Heidi Montag grew up in Crested Butte, Colorado, where she lived from the age of three. Her parents, Darlene and Tim Egelhoff, own a popular restaurant in the area, called the Timberline. Her mother, once a ski racing coach, is also a real estate agent. Heidi is the middle Montag child, having both an older sister, Holly, and a younger brother, Sky. After high school, Montag moved to San Francisco, California to study fashion at the Academy of Art University. At freshman orientation, she met Lauren Conrad, star of MTV's Laguna Beach, and the two became close friends. Montag first appeared on MTV during season two of Laguna Beach when she was staying with the Conrad family for the summer. Montag was seen on several episodes acting as best friend to Lauren Conrad and secondary cast member Jennifer Bunney; she was also friendly with Dieter Schmitz, Kristin Cavallari, Alex Hooser, and Stephen Colletti all of whom she knew from a trip with Conrad to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Both Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad left the Academy of the Arts and transferred to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, sharing an apartment in Los Angeles, California. In the summer of 2005, MTV began filming the lives of the roommates for Conrad's Laguna Beach spin-off reality show The Hills. Montag left the Fashion Institute in autumn of 2005 when she was hired as an intern at Bolthouse Productions. According to Montag, she dropped out because she did not find the school challenging. Within two years Montag was promoted to from intern to event planner at Bolthouse, and she has no plans to return to fashion school.

Heidi Montag began dating Jordan Eubanks in 2005 and their relationship was featured on season one of The Hills. The couple celebrated their six month anniversary in episode six. Montag received a Chihuahua puppy from Eubanks as a Christmas present that year. Caring for the dog, which Montag named Bella, was too much work; within a year Montag gave the dog away to a friend. Montag broke off her relationship with Eubanks in the spring of 2006, a move she has described as "the best decision of [her] life" and something she should have done much sooner. After the split, Montag spent more time with her close friend Audrina Patridge, another cast member of The Hills.

Since the summer of 2006, Montag has been dating Spencer Pratt. Pratt, friend and manager of Brody Jenner, met Montag through Kristin Cavallari who was then dating Jenner. Season two of The Hills (which aired from February through April of 2007) focused on Montag's relationship with Pratt and its effect on her friendships with Conrad and Patridge. On episode two, Montag led Pratt to believe that she was pregnant (although she had already gotten a negative result on a home pregnancy test). He was supportive about the hypothetical pregnancy, which likely led Montag to author a blog on her MySpace page on July 29, 2006 entitled, "BEST boyfriend EVER!!!!!" On The Hills' season two finale, Montag moved out of her apartment with steady roommate Conrad to live with Pratt.

According to an interview with Montag in February of 2007, she no longer spends as much time going out to clubs; she has been "keeping a low profile and being responsible." As of March, 2007, Montag has given up drinking alcohol.

Montag reportedly visited a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon on March 20 to undergo a breast enlargement (which the doctor offered to perform free of charge in exchange for publicity on the upcoming season three of The Hills), but decided to forgo the operation because she "didn't think it was a good message to send to her fans." However, on April 2, 2007, Montag underwent breast augmentation surgery, performed by the doctor she visited in March. She reportedly had a rhinoplasty operation at the same time.
